My research topic was “Post-harvest seed physiology and conservation of the germplasm of Syzygium cordatum hochst.” The research focused on the long-term conservation of an African indigenous fruit species in order to contribute towards food security. In this study I used biotechnological and tissue culture techniques, light, transmission electron and fluorescence microscopy, and cryopreservation techniques, in combination with environmental conservation techniques. This study lends itself to contributing towards achieving the targets set by the Global Strategy for Plant Conservation for ex situ conservation of an endangered edible plant species (Syzygium cordatum) and is a practical application of current biodiversity conservation policies.
