Vitality Group, a subsidiary of Discovery Limited is responsible for the expansion of the Vitality Shared-Value Insurance business model beyond South Africa and the UK, serving to fully leverage the assets and intellectual property of Discovery beyond its primary markets. The business forms equity or contractual partnerships with leading global insurers to integrate Vitality and shared value with partner’s insurance and financial services products in the markets where they operate. Vitality Group also operates a business providing wellness solutions to employer groups in the United States. Vitality Health International, a business unit within Vitality Group coordinates and focuses on resource allocation to Discovery’s emerging, global health insurance initiatives. Key Purpose


VHI, in tandem with Discovery Health, launched a range of health insurance products and Vitality in several countries on the African continent, to meet the growing need for sophisticated health insurance for multinational corporations operating in Africa. VHI is leveraging Discovery Health’s insurance administration and Vitality’s V1 Platform to provide world-class shared-value health insurance and Vitality to more countries in Africa. In addition, a Travel for Treatment product has been launched to provide an all-inclusive service offering to residents of African countries wishing to travel to South Africa, the UK or France, for treatment not available in their home countries.

The Senior Operational lead for Africa should have considerable experience driving strategic projects and overseeing operational functions. It is a critical part of the role to navigate complex, shifting environments to oversee the successful execution of strategic, commercial, and operational initiatives to drive business growth, and mitigate any threats and risks. This role is best suited to someone who is ambitious and has the passion and drive of a business owner. Someone who takes accountability for issues and displays strong and decisive leadership in resolving them.


Areas of responsibility may include but not limited to

  • Contribute to the crafting of the strategic direction/ frameworks of the Africa business.
  • Oversee the successful running of the daily operations and performance of the Africa division across the Africa Health Insurance, Vitality and Travel for Treatment product houses; for a range of key business functions. Use expertise in technical areas to enrich projects and drive reporting on on key business indicators to track business performance.
  • Conduct regular in-depth analyses of business operations in view of enhancing current business practices across the entire Africa portfolio (Health Insurance, Travel For Treatment and Vitality).
  • Leads and supports both technical and operational areas with issue resolution by swiftly managing high-level business escalations and deciding and advising on appropriate escalation measures and corrective actions. Ensure the Africa business can deliver exceptional results by monitoring adherence to key Service Level Agreements (SLAs) with various partners internally and externally.
  • Support the team to be aware of, and monitor budget setting processes and ensure that spending and budgeting are in line with business objectives and relevant legislation, and escalate to Heads responsible to take corrective action where necessary
  • Pro-actively initiate and conduct research to identify potential new business ventures, partnerships and revenue streams for the Africa business, in line with strategic objectives.
  • Provide input and where required, develop collate, deliver, and present reports at key executive meetings, including Excos, Steercos, Committees and Boards, as required. Provide strategic administrative support in driving Africa EXCO and Africa MANCO (agenda setting, preparation, taking strategic minutes).
  • Worksclosely with Discovery’s systems development teams to drive implementation of key deliverables which may including dealing with third party technology vendors and driving integration objectives.
  • Stakeholder relationship management - collaborate with various internal and external stakeholders across all leadership levels to ensure company growth and stability; and
  • Provide leadership, oversight, mentorship and support to the broader members of the team as required.

Personal Attributes and Skills

  • Proven track record of leading large, complex strategic projects with multiple stakeholders, and driving organisational change and/or new business initiatives
  • Considerable experience leading multi-disciplinary teams and managing projects and deliverables in multiple locations and countries
  • Critical thinking skills to identify opportunities for business improvement across a broad range of business functions
  • Experience developing and implementing a wide variety of solutions across people, processes, and systems to help a business achieve its strategic goals and objectives
  • Demonstrable experience of stakeholder management at all levels, across different cultures, sectors and industries
  • Excellent time management and strong project management skills with a demonstrated ability to multi-task
  • Detailed understanding of metrics/dashboards required to drive an environment and culture of continuous improvement
  • Excellent communication skills – written and verbal
  • Strong leadership skills, leading by example to inspire and motivate others, empowering teams and direct reports to reach their full potential

Education and Experience


  • Minimum Tertiary degree (Honours) in any field
  • Postgraduate studies in business such as a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) in Management and Business Administration, or an MBA would be advantageous.


  • Minimum 5 years’ experience in Discovery and/or a successful track record as an experienced middle-senior level manager in a sizeable external business.


  • Exposure to multiple business functions including, but not limited to:
  • Servicing and operations
  • Customer experience management
  • Digital/Systems/IT
  • Commercial – including partnerships
  • Business development including sales, distribution, and marketing,
  • Stakeholder management across private, public sectors
  • Strategy/R&D
  • Human capital management; and Finance
  • Evidence of good people leadership:
    • Aligned to Discovery values, culture, and leadership charter
    • Able to help attract and retain top talent and effectively develop others
  • Thorough understanding of the Discovery shared-value health insurance model, specifically the integration of Health, Vitality, and the Vitality Group.
  • Has a strong internal network and good relationships at senior levels across Discovery
  • Good understanding of the Pan-African context
  • Additional languages – French, Portuguese, other African languages
  • Prior experience as an EA/Chief of Staff
